Annual Subscription on iOS?

Is there a discounted annual subscription? I’m on monthly and cant find an option to change to annual. Thanks!

Yes, there is, but it’s not available through Apple’s billing system so you’ll have to switch to being billed directly by Strum Machine.

More info below, but the TL;DR is: use the Help menu in the app to contact support, and we’ll help you get switched over to the annual plan.

There are two ways you can subscribe to Strum Machine:

  • If you subscribe through the website, you will be billed by Strum Machine directly via our payment processor Stripe. We’re able to manage your subscription on your behalf, issue prorated refunds, etc.

  • If you subscribe through the iOS app, you will be billed by Apple’s “In-App Purchases” system, which is completely managed by Apple—we have zero ability to manage things on our end. This is was the only allowed way to offer subscriptions in the iOS app. (A recent court ruling against Apple changed this, but I still need to update the in-app subscription form.)

I’ve considered offering the annual plan on the Apple platform, but there’s a problem. I’ve always offered prorated refunds in you cancel a subscription mid-term, but this isn’t possible through Apple. And it seemed like a recipe for confusion to talk about offering prorated refunds in one place, but not be able to offer them if you happen to subscribe through Apple.

I could stop offering prorated refunds. Most companies don’t offer them anyway; part of the reason for an annual plan discount is that it locks you in. But… meh. I like to offer them.

I could add an annual plan to iOS anyway, and just add some messaging to make it clear that there are no prorated refunds. I need to ponder this more and gather some feedback, but it could be an option.

For now, the only way to get an annual plan is to cancel your existing Apple-managed subscription, then write to us so we can switch you over to being billed by Strum Machine. We make it so that you aren’t double-charged for any unused time in your Apple subscription.
