I really like using the auto advance feature to keep me on my toes. Would it possible for just a little more time between songs? Maybe just a little rest before the next count off? Some time to put the capo on or just take a little breather before the next song. My duo uses the bass in live performances. Im starting to try to use the medley feature to do 3-4 songs in a row but it’s just too quick to the next song.
I wonder if you could add an Intro to the 2nd & 3rd songs where the Intro is just 8 measures of rests. Enable the Intro in the medley.
Interesting… I will try that.
I will also try adding an ending of rests to the song I’m on.
So I tried adding rests before and after a song to give me a little more time between songs. The problem I encountered was if I add a rest to the beginning of the song, I won’t get the count in correctly. Also, when I added a few rests to the end of a song, it wouldn’t play the ending correctly. Is there any way we can control how much time between songs while using auto advance? Some time to put on a capo, switch instruments,… etc? This feature would also be great in the medleys. If I wanted a little gap between songs, it would be nice to have that option.
Let me see what I can do…
Maybe another way around. Instead of adding rest to existing songs, why not add a new song, however long, made by “rests”. This song will be treated as a song and should not interfere with the existing ones.
Thanks for responding. I thought about that also but then I’ll get a count in 1–2-3-4 that goes to nothing… lol. My duo uses the bass for live performances. That would be kinda odd. I haven’t checked if I can mute the count in on just specific songs… so maybe I’ll try that. Thanks again
You can’t have different count-in settings per song. But I intend to add a delay setting to the next beta version of Strum Machine. It’s going to be another large update that is mostly under-the-hood changes, so it will be only accessible through the beta website/app at first. I’ll post an announcement when it’s ready to use!
Thank you! I was at a string band festival this weekend. It’s amazing how many strum machine users I noticed. Even some of the big hitters there! Great app. Really enjoying it.
The beta version of Strum Machine now has an adjustable delay for the Auto-Advance “play next song automatically” feature.
Try it out and let me know what you think!
I’m trying it out tonight using the Strum Machine and it isn’t automatically playing the next tune. I confirmed that the same set of 5 tunes will automatically play the next tune though it doesn’t have the new delay in it - for the Windows App version of Strum Machine.
I’ve had a couple reports of broken Auto-Advance with the new beta, but I haven’t been able to break it myself so it’s hard to know what’s going on.
To confirm: Auto-Advance is successfully loading the next song, but then the next playback does not start even if “Play next song” is toggled on… is that right? The play button is supposed to show this during the delay; can I assume this isn’t shown either?
The play button does not look like that when using the new Auto-Advance auto play feature in the Beta version. It is the regular button from the non-Beta version.
I’m trying to track this issue down; works OK on all my devices and haven’t been able to see how this could be happening. I did add some more debugging code to try and catch potential bugs, so please try again and I will check the logs. Thanks!
I tried it on both Chrome and Edge browsers and it still doesn’t display that Get Ready icon or even play the next song. HOWEVER! I watched the transition and it just might put Get Ready up for a split second before it displays the usual Play icon. Something on the icon jumps as the next song is pulled up. It is too fast to see if it is the Get Ready icon.
Just deployed another update. I think I’ve got it fixed now, but please let me know. This was a tricky one!
Yeah! It works. Looks great! I’ll use this feature often.
The auto-advance delay option is amazing! Thank you all so much for doing this. It gives me time to put on a capo, switch instruments, take a sip of “water”, or just a little breather between songs… etc. It’s great. Another option I was considering is, would it be possible to have a random option off the setlist a person is practicing from? That way I wouldn’t know what’s coming up next. It might keep me on my toes a little more during a practice session. Thanks!
Glad to hear the Auto-Advance playback delay feature is working well!
If you enable Shuffle on the list, the next song will be random – labeled with a 3 in this screenshot:
From the docs:
You can use the shuffle feature to mix up your practice routine. When you enable it, the next/previous song links will traverse a randomized list that Strum Machine generates and stores in memory. This guarantees that every song in your list will be served up exactly once , until you get through all the songs in the list. At that point, you’ll see a “Reshuffle list” link, which you can use to start over with a newly-randomized list.
