Curated lists

I created a popular list on Strum Machine, Celtic Tunes. It would be nice if I could add a few notes to the list to tell others what I expect when they add a tune to my list. For example, I always want to see at least 4 bars of Intro. If a tune is added without the Intro I’ll create my own version with the Intro and remove the newly added version. Would it be appropriate if I cleared duplicates from my list, picking only the version that I prefer? Is the person who added a tune that I removed get notified that I’ve removed their tune?

I would think if it’s your list you can make changes as you see fit.

I agree, and will do that. I’d just like to be able to make a note on my list of what is expected.

So, admittedly, the “make list editable by anyone” scenario has not been rigorously engineered. It was meant more for sharing with one or several trusted friends, like in a band, or between a teacher and student, etc. Not so much for sharing with the public, as there are no access controls, no change tracking or logging, no notifications, nothing to prevent others from wreaking havoc with your lists. Now, only registered Strum Machine users could do this, and as a rule, the musicians in this community are a pretty considerate lot. :slightly_smiling_face: But mistakes happen…

One thing you could do is to set your Celtic Tunes list to be read-only again, and create and publish a second list called “Celtic Tunes - Submissions” or something, which anyone can add to. Then you can periodically either move those tunes into Celtic Tunes, or create your own version and then remove the submission from the list. That’s probably what I would do in your situation.

Note that if you remove a tune from a list, it does not delete the tune from the library of the person who created it. (Though they will see it gone from your list.)

Collaboration in general (and list notes and sharing in particular) is definitely an area of improvement I want to tackle in the future. Probably going to be awhile based on some things I want to build first, though.

The change that I’d like to request is the ability to add notes to the title of a list. If I could use the [brackets] to tell people to submit tunes through another list and I’ll review the submissions and add to the read-only list - that is all I really need to make this work. If I lock my Celtic list, there is no method to tell people where to submit new tunes to add to the list.

I agree, being able to add a description/notes to a list would be useful. I will add this to the to-do list.

In the meantime, a hacky workaround I just thought of is to make a “dummy” song with a title equal to whatever you want to communicate, and prefix it with an emoji or something to make it rise to the top. Example:

Wouldn’t be able to link to another list this way, though, so it’s not ideal. But it’s something. You could direct folks to search the forum for your “submissions” list, perhaps…

I tried it and it works! See what I did to my list here → Celtic Tunes
