I recently installed Linux Mint 22.3-Xfce 64 bit on my little Acer AO722 laptop. The Acer has been upgraded to 8 gb of ram memory and a 200 gb SSD. The plan is to use it in conjunction with a Bose Soundlink Color II speaker as a portable Strum Machine studio (connected by 3.5 mm cable since the laptop has no Bluetooth). This worked well with Windows 10 but since Windows 10 is no longer going to be supported by Microsoft, I decided to try installing Linux. The Linux installation went smoothly but the audio of Strum Machine is very choppy and basically unusable in the default FireFox browser. The Strum Machine stand alone application is significantly worse. Does anyone here have suggestions for tweaking Linux Mint Xfce audio parameters to fix the Strum Machine audio output? For anyone seeing this in the future, we figured out over email that this was basically a performance issue—the little Acer AO722’s CPU is very slow, with an underpowered CPU even when it was released 16 years ago, and couldn’t keep up with the audio generation demands of Strum Machine. (Fun fact: pretty sure I had an AO722 back in the day.)
Daniel was able to get it working on a Thinkpad X220 though; despite it being of a similar vintage, it is fast enough to work.
