Repeated chords sound different?

Hi.
I’m new to all this, so this might be a very silly question but here we go anyway.

I’ve noticed that repeated chords don’t sound the same. For instance, listen to the beginning of Ground Hog (major version). It’s |G D7|G G| but that last repeated G doesn’t sound like a G, to me it sounds exactly like the D7 in the previous bar.
Are my ears lying to me? What am I missing here?

Hi Maarten, could you attach your file? It’s difficult to tell without hearing it.

My guess is that you’re hearing the alternating downbeats on the bass and guitar. Both would be playing a D note in that last repeated G chord (the fifth of the chord) which to some ears can make it sound not quite like a G chord. This is common practice in bluegrass, old-time, and many other music styles. You can, however, disable it if you like by going into Band Settings, clicking on Guitar and/or Bass, and finding the setting for “Alternating” or “Root-Fifth” and changing it.
