In this short video, I announce and demo some new beta updates to the mandolin, fill you in on what’s been going on behind the scenes these past few months, and also announce Strum Machine’s presence at the 2024 IBMA World of Bluegrass Conference’s trade show, which is where I’m headed on Tuesday!
To access the beta version and try out this new mandolin chop, go to beta.strummachine.com (you must already have a Strum Machine account).
Or, get the iPhone/iPad “SM Beta” app through TestFlight here. (Android doesn’t have the web browser bugs that iOS has, so while there’s no beta Android app, going to beta.strummachine.com works just as well.)
Let me know what you think of these new mandolin features! I think there’s definitely still room for improvement but it’s a step forward at least.

I love what you did with the Mandolin strums. In fact, I can’t live without them. I’m currently using the beta website pinned to the desktop on my laptop and phone and have been using it exclusively since you launched it. I wondering if you’re going to make that available as a beta app at some point.
It’s unlikely that I’ll make a separate desktop app for the beta version, because I use a third-party service (for which I pay monthly) to provide the desktop app and I’d have to pay double to have a second app version available.
My recommendation for getting an app-like experience without installing a separate desktop app is this:
- Enable Offline Mode in Strum Machine through the top-left menu > Advanced Settings.
- Use the browser feature that creates an app-like shortcut on your computer.
